Understanding Innovation: The Impact of Design Thinking in Education
Tumblr media
Over the past decade or so, design thinking has seen a huge uptake in educational settings: it's shifting the way students learn and the way teachers teach. Design thinking is different from the traditional approach by highlighting problem-solving rather than memorization and creativity. This method helps students build up essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, empathy and adaptability. In this article, we will discuss design thinking, its impact on education, and the pros and cons of incorporating it into the curriculum.
What Is Design Thinking?
Solving problems creatively is the central concept behind design thinking. Based on the principles of human-centred design, this approach uses empathy to understand users' needs and come up with innovative solutions before refining them with an iterative process. Design Thinking’s structured yet flexible process includes defining the problem, brainstorming, prototyping, and testing solutions.
The Shift in Education
Rote education is often used in traditional education, often preventing creativity and critical thinking. Design Thinking brings a new learning paradigm. Students are encouraged to think critically and question assumptions. It also develops real-world solutions. It leads students to be innovators and effective problem solvers in application.
Why It Matters in Education
As the world changes quickly, education must be able to prepare students to be creative and find solutions to complex problems. Using Design Thinking, educators foster creative ways of beating challenges, the mind open and full of solutions. Such a shift is critical to respond to an uncertain future.
Key Elements of Design Thinking in Education
These are the key elements of design thinking in education:
Empathy in Learning
Design Thinking is about empathy. Students who learn how to 'put themselves in others' shoes' get to understand things from more perspectives. The ability to work in a group, which is an important key for emotional intelligence and collaboration is this. Empathy gives students the idea that diverse viewpoints are important, which builds their social and communication abilities.
Collaboration and Teamwork
Collaboration is a key part of Design Thinking. They often work in groups in classrooms adopting this approach and combining the diverse ideas of the students as the end product. The teamwork creates a setting where the students learn to see various viewpoints and find it useful to work together during work settings in the future.
Real-World Problem Solving
Design Thinking aids in filling the void between education and applying in real life. Students gain practical experience by dealing with actual problems facing the community of the school environment. This hands-on learning makes education real and meaningful, lending students with ability to explore theoretical knowledge in a practical approach.
Implementing Design Thinking
This is how to implement design thinking:
Hands-on Learning Experiences
Many schools with Design Thinking are reporting higher levels of student engagement. Education is made real by involving students in real-life problem-solving activities. For instance, several Bachelor of Design degree programs expose students to real-world projects and nurture their ability of creativity and critical thinking.
Fostering a Culture of Innovation
The concept of Design Thinking is all about risk-taking and experimenting. It doesn’t discourage failure but instead encourages learning from mistakes. In this process, students brainstorm, test, and refine their ideas. Especially, it is particularly relevant in the B Design course, where creativity and problem-solving are very important....Read more

Psychology academics are not here to treat you with kid gloves, sweetness and love and tell you what you want to hear
I work in film. I'd already gotten a uni degree, I was happy, and then I got into reading psychology books and became hooked. And when I became hooked, I got myself a BSc in Psychology out of pure fascination for the subject.
I am not a therapist, nor a counsellor, purely because I still work in film, I love working in film, and psychology is a passion which I find extremely helpful in my work and in my life, but I have no desire to spend every day of my life listening to people's drama. Sounds cold? Well, welcome to science.
But obviously in social media one finds all kinds of things, and I'm always interested in anything related to psychology, so one thing I keep finding is people, somehow, always assume if you know psychology you must constantly treat people like they're injured animals and you're a vet? We must be sweet and loving with complete strangers, and treat them with kid gloves, as if the air might hurt them??? It's wacky.
Anybody who knows anything about psychology knows you ought to distance yourself emotionally from mentally sick people, or else it'll kill you. You've got to be a scientist, be objective, not get attached, not get emotionally involved. And it isn't our duty to treat people like they're fragile. Our duty is to be honest, to do what we can to help out, specially for those who are actual therapists, and only when paid to do so, because hey, it's a job.
Psychology isn't there to pamper people, make them feel better and tell them what they want to hear. Psychologists who do that are the shit ones who then cause a ton of trouble. Psychology is a science, it looks at things objectively, and if you're a piece of shit, it's supposed to hold you accountable, to make you responsible for your actions and to help you have the right tools to turn your life around. But responsibility and accountability are essential in any self-respected therapy, so don't expect to be pitied and given a hug if what you need is a bloody wake up call.

Note
How did you choose biology as your subject of choice? I'm currently finishing up my BSc in psychology, but I don't know what to do next.
I always had some kind of inclination- I was always the weird animal/dinosaur kid. And that interest just... never really died. Being outside and in nature a lot helped (shoutout to my parents on this, we have a complicated relationship but this was one thing they did very, very right). But I always thought I would be the most interested in some kind of ecology or evolutionary biology, something that involved being outside, observing the world, or talking about extinct life.
The thing is, as I continued to have this interest, I found myself drawn deeper and deeper into the what made the animals tick. When you see an animal with some quirks and specific adaptations out in nature, how do those work on the molecular level? What genes control it? Where ecology is focused on characterizing how those traits affect the organism interacting with its environment, I more felt drawn to the underlying mechanisms of the traits themselves.
Right now, I'm working on a niche little model organism that we hope can provide insight into some aspects of cell biology that most conventional model organisms can't, and eventually apply those to other species (including humans). It's pretty much exactly what I hoped I would be doing, even as a kid- taking a deeper dive into an unconventional animal's biology.
The final nail in the coffin was actually volunteering in ecology research. It was an amazing experience... but also made me realize what a career in ecology ACTUALLY looked like, and what kind of impact it could have (that's a whole other ramble in itself). I switched majors to molecular biology during undergrad, and have been dragged into bioinformatics periodically, and I haven't looked back. Wildlife watching, birdwatching, freediving, and basically anything that gets me observing nature are still my primary hobbies, however.

Please don't go to Prince Harry and Meghan for mental health advice (maybe come to me instead!)
For those who don't know, among my studies there's a BSc in Psychology and I post psychology stuff now and then in @thepsychologytemple. I'm not a psychologist, but I've got the qualifications and I've also been a patient and received therapy and, similarly to Harry, a lot of it was due to grief and family drama. And I am telling you nothing he says speaks "I'm an emotionally and mentally healthy guy qualified to give others advice on mental health". So even though I normally don't care about Harry and don't have bad nor good opinions, I was quite horrified to find out that apparently not only is he trying to make a career out of providing advice for others' mental health and struggles, but he's having people pay +30 dollars to hear him speak about his intimate struggles.
Look, if you're so desperate that youre willing to pay Harry for help, please sink the money into actual therapy. It takes years of studying hard to become a certified psychologist and even then, you're supposed to continue to do research and be subjected to the continuous review and criticism of your peers. And you know what therapists and psychologists are never supposed to do? Among other things, saying anything about their own private, personal lives. The only reason any mental health professional or business is giving Harry any voice is because we're in the middle of a worldwide mass mental health crisis and if famous voices talk about it then perhaps people will get help. And some people admittedly only want the money that Harry can bring through convincing people to go to them. I promise you no half-respectable mental health professional would EVER deem Harry is a good option to receive even the slightest bit of advice, unless that advice is go to proper therapy.
Harry has NOT healed. He is NOT in peace. He is NOT happy. And none of his public actions could possibly give him a true mental and emotional health and healing.
When you're in peace, when you heal from a traumatic event, it stops violently affecting you. For example, you know you've moved on from a loss and are OK when the thought of it out of the blue on a regular day may make you sad, but only a bit. When your emotions remain under control and do not make your day to day more difficult. When you don't feel overwhelmed with negative emotions, like sadness or anger.
I know a fair bit about loss because it was the main thing thar dragged me into first therapy and then psychology. I already had a University degree when I decided I was struggling too much (I'd lost my dad, other seven relatives, and my best friend), so I began going to therapy and reading lots of therapy and self help stuff. And then I decided I needed more and went into formally studying psychology. That's when I actually, truly healed, so I know what that looks like and I guarantee you I'm not writing books profiting from the trauma caused to me by death, life, family and my stupid brother. I could, but I'm OK, so I don't need to spend months writing about it, dwelling on it, then ranting about it to everyone publicly, then going to the telly and dwelling on it so much and making documentaries about it. Instead, I'm busy being happy. And happiness does keep you busy. When you have clear purposes in life, a happy family, work (I'm an actress, camera woman and production assistant), hobbies (I do lots of writing and piano)... you don't have time nor energy to go on national television and be bitter, angry and resentful and talking about the intimate stuff from your own family.
It worries me that young people specially look up to Harry like a saviour and I want you to know, if you need any free advice about your family, love life, friends, mental health, emotional stuff, whatever! You can come to me at @thepsychologytemple . No judgement. I don't care who you are. I will treat you with all the objectivity I can, you can even send anonymous messages if you want. And I'll do what I can. Better me than Harry.
